Born on November 27, 1952 in Dipolog City, from a simple famer family, grow in Labason and after in Cebu City, where he worked as tailor until he entered in San Carlos Seminary College. He felt attraction to religious life but the Bishop of Basilan offered to support his studies if he became a priest for the Diocese of Basilan.
On April 28, 1981, Fr. Nilo was ordained priest in Dipolog City by Bishop Jose Ma. Querexeta, CFM of Basilan. For nine years, he was the parish priest and youth animator in Basilan Island.
Time after time, he expressed to his Bishop the intention to be a religious, but his service was so precious in the middle of this island at south Zamboanga. In 1990 Fr. Nilo obtained the permission from the bishop to live a contemplative life. From November of 1990 to January of 1993, he lived in Transfiguration Monastery in Malaybalay, Bukidnon with Benedictine monks.
From 1993 to 1999, he lived a semi-contemplative life in Balas, Labason and worked in his land and preached amongst the parishes in the Diocese of Dipolog in Franciscan simplicity. He met Sr. Caritas who helped him to encounter deeply the life according to humility and poverty in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi.
On 1999, he met the Friars of the Third Order Regular in Iligan City and asked to join them. The Minister General Fr. Bonaventure Midili, TOR proposed that he (and his two brothers living with him as hermits in Labason) join the TOR and after a brief time Fr. Nilo and Br. Alvin reached Iligan to join with Fr. Carlo Stradioli, TOR, Fr. Dante Anhao, TOR, and Fr. Marcello Fadda, TOR of the Province of Saint Francis of Assisi, Italy.
He went to Italy for a period of Novitiate in Massa Martana and on September 16, 2001 he professed simple vows and in October he came back to Iligan. From 2004 – 2008 he was assigned as parish priest of San Lorenzo Parish, Tambo, Iligan City.
In 2009, he was assigned to explore the possibilities of finding land and a house in Davao City for the friar students in Theology and in 2010 he was the local minister of the new TOR community in Brgy. Indangan, Davao City.
He was transferred back in Iligan friary in 2011. He became the spiritual animator of the Secular Franciscans for which he was elected as Regional Spiritual Assistant and at the same time spiritual assistant for the OFS community in Iligan. He became the administrator of San Pedro Calungsod Parish in 2015 and then served as parish priest until 2018. Due to his sickness, he was reassigned as the local minister of the TOR friary in Iligan from 2018-2020.
On October 10, 2021 around 4:40 am Fr. Nilo happily embraced sister death. On October 16, 2021, Most Rev. Edwin Dela Pena, DD, Bishop of the Prelature of Marawi celebrated the funeral for Fr. Nilo C. Laput, TOR held at our Friary in Iligan.
