Father Juan Grau Crespí

August 5, 1928 – November 9, 2021
Province of the Immaculate Conception, Spain

Fr. Juan Grau Crespí, was born in Santa Eugenia, Mallorca, on August 5, 1928. Son of Antonio Grau Coll and Francisca Crespí Bibiloni, he was baptized on August 11, 1928 and confirmed on October 2, 1930.

He received the Franciscan habit on July 18, 1943 in Llucmajor and after the novitiate held in Artà, he made his temporary profession on August 13, 1944. It was in the city of Rome where he made his solemn profession on October 7, 1949. In Palma, in September 1948, he received the minor orders, and on March 10, 1951, in Rome, the subdiaconate. On May 19, 1951 he received the diaconate, and from the hands of Bishop Francisco Beretti, he was ordained a priest on July 1, 1951.

He studied Humanities and Philosophy at the Porziúncola and Theology in Rome, obtaining the title of Bachelor of Theology at the Angelicum in June 1951. After priestly ordination, he continued in Rome until 1953, studying Sociology, and from 1953 to 1955, he was assigned to the Llucmajor Fraternity where he devoted himself to teaching. In August 1955, he was assigned to the parish of San Juan de Mata in Barcelona as Coadjutor Vicar. He also spent a few years at the Porziúncola as Professor of Philosophy.

Since the Provincial Congregation of 1977, he had been assigned to the Parish of San Juan de Mata, and has continued in that parish, until today, holding various positions as Coadjutor Vicar and Vicar of the Fraternity.

Father Juan was a Franciscan very committed to the working-class neighborhood of Sant Andreu in Barcelona: ministering to the workers, migrant families, young people and the residence for the elderly in the area. His sensitivity was expressed in his taste for music, reading and his affection for the Catalan language and identity.

After two weeks, struggling with the coronavirus, without losing peace and always encouraging others, he was visited by Sister Death at dawn on November 9. On Wednesday the 10th, in the morning, he received a Christian burial in the Santa Coloma de Gramanet cemetery, and in the afternoon, his funeral was held in the Parish of San Joan de Mata.
